A New Jersey Vascular Doctor Explains How to Avoid Recurrent Varicose Veins

Dr. Lowell Kabnick, New Jersey vein specialist, explains how to avoid suffering from varicose veins again next summer.

What do New Jersey residents need to know about recurrent varicose veins?
Last summer, you took the step of treating your varicose veins and they are gone, along with your swollen legs and ankles! Of course, you want to do everything you can to avoid having varicose veins again next summer. Fortunately, modern varicose vein treatments have come a long ways since the days when our mothers or our aunts had treatments – in those days, varicose veins were much more likely to recur, because the treatments available (such as vein stripping) weren’t as effective, and without the benefit of ultrasound technology many veins that needed treatment were missed. So the veins just came back with time.

Today, vein stripping has been replaced by sclerotherapy, microphlebectomy, and endovenous ablation techniques, all of which are more effective at permanently removing varicose veins. What’s more, the advent of ultrasound imaging lets your New Jersey vascular doctor “see” the veins deep beneath the skin, including the ones that need treatment. Now you can be much more certain that all the veins that need treatment receive it.

Are there other steps I can take to prevent those veins from coming back?
Risk factors for varicose veins include your family medical history and your age, which you can’t do much about. However, being overweight and living a sedentary lifestyle are also risk factors, because they increase the stress on your circulatory system. Smoking stresses your circulatory system as well. So once your veins are treated, it’s still important to work with your doctors on lifestyle factors that can affect the likelihood that you will suffer from varicose veins again in the future. NJVC’s vein specialists will not abandon you after your treatment. We intend to maintain long-term relationships with our patients, because we know how important it is not to have to go through vein treatments again and again. So if you detect aching or swollen legs and ankles coming back, or any of the other symptoms that often accompany varicose veins, don’t wait to give us a call. Since we’ll already have your medical history on file, we can quickly determine the best approach to keeping those varicose veins at bay or at least slowing their progress. If they do recur someday, we’ll be ready to treat them quickly and efficiently, just as before.

The important thing is to keep in contact with us and not wait until varicose veins have already re-appeared before letting us know of your concerns.
