Ask a NJ Vein Specialist: Can my varicose veins really be eliminated?
You may have heard about the new vein treatments, including sclerotherapy, microphlebectomy, and endovenous laser treatment. You may already know that they are minimally invasive and can be performed in about an hour right in your NJ vein doctor’s office. What you may wonder, though: does it really work? Can NJ vein disease treatment really eliminate my varicose veins? To answer that question, it helps to know a little bit about how varicose veins develop.
What do Morris County residents need to know about varicose veins?
Varicose veins develop as a result of venous insufficiency, which occurs when the tiny valves inside our veins begin to break down. They may break down due to age or damage, and can be the result of a genetic tendency or certain lifestyle factors. People over age 50 are at greater risk of developing varicose veins, as are those people with a family history of venous disease. People who are overweight or obese, and who smoke and live sedentary lifestyles are also at risk. Once venous insufficiency has started, it won’t go away on its own. It is a progressive condition, meaning that without treatment it will get worse. However, modern, minimally invasive NJ varicose vein treatments have been developed that can remove or seal off varicose veins permanently. Microphlebectomy involves removing varicose veins through tiny incisions in the skin, incisions so small they heal with no scarring. Endovenous laser treatment and sclerotherapy both seal off varicose veins, either through injection of a chemical into the vein, or the heat from a laser beam, or sometimes radiofrequency waves. All of these methods close down the vein, causing the body to reroute blood through healthier veins in the area, and gradually reabsorbing the old vein so that it disappears from view.
So will my varicose vein ever come back?
The veins that have been removed or sealed off through our minimally invasive procedures will not come back, ever. These techniques are permanent. However what they cannot do is prevent the development of new varicose veins in the future. That’s why it’s very important to develop a trusting relationship with your NJ vein specialist, so that you can take steps to prevent future varicose veins from developing, and take quick action to treat any new varicose veins that may arise. The first step to finding out your current venous health status is to visit Dr. Lowell S. Kabnick for a venous health evaluation. You may have minimal problems that can be treated conservatively, through lifestyle changes. If treatment is needed, you and Dr. Kabnick can discuss your particular health and aesthetic concerns to ensure your treatment objectives are met. Together, you can also come up with a plan to deal with any future instances of varicose veins quickly and simply, right in our Morristown vein treatment center.
